About Us

Pacific Island Projects (PIP) is a nonprofit organisation that aims to empower sustainable forestry actions in Papua New Guinea. Our multimedia resources address the learning needs of families, school children, landowners, tree growers, and wood processors. Everything is freely available online.

Our Story

In 2006, Simon and Noven Rollinson moved to Rabaul with their four young children and set to work from the family home overlooking the Simpson harbour with Mount Tavurvur erupting nearby. Over the years, they discovered that one project often led to another, creating a research and development continuum that has facilitated the creation of six matching tool kits designed to empower sustainable forestry actions. Over 3,000 resources in 750 folders are now available online for free.

Initially, information and communication activities were project-based, as the PIP team developed and tested the tool kits with project partners and beneficiaries. Today, an online communication strategy enables us to reach our target audiences throughout Papua New Guinea, with ongoing support from a growing crowd of donors at home and abroad.

Our Team

Meet the people behind our empowerment activities:

Noven Rollinson
Co-founder

As co-founder, Noven plays a key role in ensuring the PIP team stays focused on the PIP mission statement, working alongside our partners in East New Britain Province. Likewise, she is also an active member of the Kuragaga Co-cathedral community in Rabaul.

Simon Rollinson
Co-founder, Managing Director

Simon left England in 1987 and has been working in PNG since 1993. He holds a BSc. in Resource & Environmental Management from the Australian National University and values teamwork and two-way communication. In addition to his managerial duties, Simon works as project consultant and partnerships builder. He is thankful that PIP’s evolution has been both transformational and unexpected.

Hanscilla Dovin
Administrator

Hanscilla manages PIP’s administrative systems, ensuring the efficient operation of accounts, backup routines, contact database, communication platforms, publication processes, and shared folders. She is also readily available to communicate with clients and partners.

James Sai Louie
E-Volunteer

James recently wrapped up a one-year online assignment with the New Zealand Volunteer Service Abroad, working remotely from his New Zealand office. During this time, he was instrumental in establishing PIP’s new website and audience engagement platforms. He took over from Ernest Niuewoudt, who had previously developed PIP’s online communication strategy. We’re now keenly looking forward to our third volunteer joining us to help implement this strategy.

Poreni Umau
Audience Engagement Leader

Poreni is responsible for connecting with our target audiences through PIP’s website and associated communication platforms, including YouTube, Facebook, and Mailchimp. He holds a BA in Communication Arts (Journalism) and has a passion for storytelling with a strong instinct to think outside the box. He previously managed the Kokopo Bureau of the Post Courier newspaper.

Shona Smith
Graphic Designer

Shona has been with PIP since day one, beginning with the PIP logo. She continues to ensure PIP’s branding, graphic design, and artwork align with our communication goals in an appealing, user-friendly layout. Shona runs Shonart, a graphic design firm in Cairns, North Queensland.

Edwin Siroi
Visual Artist

Edwin is a skilled visual artist, specialising in the creation of inspirational drawings, graphic illustrations, and paintings. His eye-catching artwork helps to communicate the key messages in PIP’s pamphlets, posters and presentations. Edwin runs Smiley Artwork from Kavieng in New Ireland Province.

Lazarus Vonoai
