Fostering partnerships to build coherence and support for forest landscape restoration

GEF Project 9861 aimed to enhance synergies in the global forest landscape restoration (FLR) process and assist countries and stakeholders scale up and strengthen FLR implementation at national and sub-national levels.

PIP collaborated with project executing agencies ITTO and IUFRO to develop a set of Learning Modules on FLR for tertiary students in tropical countries under the Collaborative Partnership on Forests Joint Initiative on FLR.

The FLTK resources assembled during the project are presented below:

Encouraging customary landowners to reforest their grasslands

ITTO Project PD 552/09 aimed to create a model reforestation framework, comprising awareness, training and support services, that encouraged customary landowners in the lowlands of Central Province to reforest their grasslands with high value trees.

PIP collaborated with PNG’s Department of Education to align the FLTK resources with the new Standards Based Curriculum.  This included the selection of additional resources to fill information gaps, followed by field-testing with target schools in Central Province. This led to the preparation of an introductory video and user guide, prior to securing government approval for the FLTK to be used in all PNG’s schools under the Science and Humanities Pathways.

The FLTK resources assembled and/or approved during the project are presented below:

Sustainable forestry outreach for schools in East New Britain

The British High Commission Port Moresby engaged PIP to provide a set of sustainable forestry resources for target schools in East New Britain Province.

The FLTK resources assembled during the project are presented below:

Improvement and management of teak and sandalwood in PNG and Australia

ACIAR Project FST/2014/069 aimed to advance the development of germplasm sources and smallholder-friendly silviculture systems for teak and sandalwood and provide new opportunities for enhancing smallholder livelihoods in these regions and achieving PNG’s plantation development target.

PIP field-tested the FLTK resources with target schools in East New Britain Province. This work led to the enhancement of the FLTK layout and contents.

Developing a PNG timber industry based on planted forests: design and implementation of a national germplasm delivery system

ACIAR Project FST/2007/078 aimed to promote the development of the PNG plantation-based timber industry by developing approaches for establishing germplasm supply and delivery mechanisms and by facilitating their adoption.

PIP assembled a complete set of school resources that highlighted the importance of tree planting activities in consultation with the East New Britain Division of Education. This led to the formation of the FLTK.
