Enabling customary landowners to participate effectively in CFM schemes
ITTO Project PD764/14 aimed to establish a model community-based land ownership mapping and forest resource assessment system that supported community forest management (CFM) schemes, including PES and REDD+, and increased landowners’ understanding about the goods and services that forests provide. Field work was undertaken with the project’s outreach partners in each region: FORCERT, Foundation for People & Community Development, Milne Bay Provincial Administration, and Research & Conservation Foundation.
This intervention was led by the PNG Forest Authority. PIP developed and field-tested a set of participatory data collection forms and software for landowners and their outreach partners, alongside training and awareness materials that were aligned with the Department of Lands & Physical Planning (DLPP)’s National Sustainable Land Use Policy (NSLUP). This led to the formation of the Community Foresters Tool Kit.

Developing a landscape management plan and monitoring framework for the YUS Conservation Area
The Tree Kangaroo Conservation Programme engaged James Cook University to lead the development of the YUS Conservation Area’s Landscape Management Plan in the remote Huon Peninsula of Morobe Province. This work included socio-economic and environmental research and monitoring, landscape management and community development planning, and community reforestation and fuelwood trials.
This intervention was led by the James Cook University. PIP adapted, field-tested and applied the PEN survey questionnaires developed by the Centre for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) to collect a set of high-quality baseline data that described the overall context of the Conservation Area. This led to the preparation of a User Guide which later supported the development of the CFTK’s socio-economic survey forms.

ITTO Pre-project CFM-PPD006/10 aimed to develop a model community-based land ownership mapping and forest resource assessment system that supports community forest management (CFM) schemes through the production of a Full-project proposal for submission to ITTO.
This intervention was led by the PNG Forest Authority. PIP conducted the review of CFM literature, PNG organisations and participatory approaches, before drafting the full-project proposal.
